Potty Training: My Nemesis.

It has been a roller coaster potty training Princess. She does really good for a few days. No accidents, very big girl attitude happening. She sings songs about wearing her "big girl panties" and everything.

Then.... there are those days. When she has accidents every day and I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to keep sheets and comforters and lets not forget her "big girl panties" washed and dried. Those days (a day like today actually) I think I'm losing my mind. I don't know how to handle this. How do I get her to communicate with me that she needs to go? How do i get her to just go if she feels the urge? Is this even normal?? I feel like screaming!

Then I wonder if maybe I'm pushing this too soon. I know each child gets it at their own pace so maybe her pace takes her a bit closer to age three. I can relax on potty training if I have to but I really dread having to children in diapers. Or maybe I shouldn't relax. maybe I should be consistent. Argh! I don't know what to do. Why does this have to be so hard!?

I'd been itching to try the new Kraft Fresh Take breadcrumb/cheese mixes since the coupon came out last month. Well I finally got my chance tonight. I picked up the Savory Four Cheese Recipe and made a meatloaf. It was so yummy. Princess even asked for seconds! Her exact words were "Mommy, can I have some more meat?" Ha! Here's what I did. 1/2 Cup Of Water

I mixed everything together in a bowl and put in a greased pan to bake at 375 degrees for 60 minutes. I served it with loaded mashed potatoes and green beans. Can you say yum? And it was super easy! My kind of dinner.

How Young Is Too Young?

I was painting my nails when Princess ran over holding out her hands saying "mommy, paint!" I promptly replied "No ma'am. You can have paint in your nails when you are 13."

I believe that is a reasonable age to begin wearing nail polish. I have several friends and family members who take their daughters the same age as Princess(2) to the nail salon to get their hands and feet done up. I like to keep the things in my children's lives age appropriate and that is too "grown-up". Princess will not being wearing make-up and that includes nail polish. I don't even wear make-up and only occasionally paint my nails. Beyond 13, I still don't see myself allowing any other make-up. No eyeshadows, eye liners, blush, lipstick or any of that sort. I feel that purpose of make-up is to attract male attention make a girl look olderand under no circumstances do I want my teenager attempting to look older so that she can attract the attention of a man twice her age. Or even a boy her age. Boys should be the last thing on her mind and if she's attracting their attention, they'll be the first thing.

Everyone does things differently and I'm not judging anyone. These are just my opinions based on my experiences. I know what boys wanted when I was that age and the only thing that has changed now is that it is acceptable for them to get it. No ma'am. I think not! That's why age appropriate is the name of the game. If it looks to grown, it is. For my daughter, anyhow.

Protective Styles On My Son

My son has really curly hair. Well, both of my children do but I'm working my way through my daughters hair. My son's hair is growing in some wonky pattern that makes him look like a friar with a line of hair down the middle. You know what I'm talking about. I would post a picture of a friar but I can't find any without a beer in their hand and I'm not about that life so....

Anywho, his hair has been really dry and crunchy lately. I realized that it's because I hadn't been moisturizing and properly protecting his hair like I'd been my daughters. So I stopped using the baby shampoo on his head, co-washed and conditioned/sealed with coconut oil and -gulp- flat twisted his patches of hair. I refuse to post a pic of the work because I'm so embarrassed about how it looked but I had to do something to protect his hair. I don't know how to braid good enough to grasp his little strands (hell, the twist job was rough but at least it held until morning) while he's moving all over the place.

At first I was like I hope this is ok in regards to me twisting his hair, then I remembered that women have been braiding their sons' hair for ages and that feeling went away immediately. All in all I'm going to treat my son's hair just as I do my daughters because I want both of them to have healthy heads of hair.

I don't think I mentioned it, but last week I received another survey in my email from Mills Advisory Panel. It stated that I would receive 200 MAP points upon completion of the survey. They don't send surveys too often so I was happy to see this one. Once I completed the survey I was asked to join a consumer panel, Of Course, I would! Remember the last time I was asked to join a panel? Uh, yeah. Well this time the qualifying question asked me if I had a webcam and a microphone/speakerphone. I replied honestly that I did not and I still qualified! My information page stated that one would be provided for me. That was on Friday (I think) then today I received an box in the mail and voila! Why I Will No Longer Watch Paula Deen

This post is entirely my own thoughts and opinions.

I love food. I love eating it, cooking it, baking it and buying it. I love watching others eat food I cooked, I love watching other people cook. I'm what you'd call a "foodie-ish". For years I have been satisfying that love by watching the Food Network channel. The hosts all seem so down-to-earth (except Bobby Flay >_<) and fun and they make everything looks so delicious and easy to make! My favorite female host had to be Paula Deen. I loved her southern disposition. I loved how she didn't latch on to the food "trends" and cooked whatever she felt like. I loved how sweet she was to her boys and I loved her gorgeous house/kitchen.

I say all of this in past tense because recent events have changed my thoughts of her. In January, Paula Deen make a public announcement that she had been diagnosed with type-2 diabetes three years ago. Three years ago. She's been hiding this information for three years while continuing to push the very foods that contributed to her condition! Instead of changing up her ingredients or making comments about moderation, nothing changed. As a matter of fact what she has done is endorse a new drug for diabetes. She is getting a big $6 million payday behind that.

I have nothing against diabetes and unfortunately have several family members, including my mother, victims of the disease. My issue is that it seems to me that Ms. Deen deliberately kept her diagnosis a secret all the while pumping up an unhealthy lifestyle to her adoring fans only to endorse a drug created for this very same disease. A disease that she could have prevented by becoming friendly with the term moderation. A disease that is still reversible by enacting that very same word along with exercise and dieting. When my mother was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, her doctor told her exactly that. That if she started to eat better(fresher) foods, and lived a more active lifestyle that she would reverse her diagnosis and for all intents and purposes, "cure" herself. I can't see how Paula Deen, someone who had a fabulous garden growing the freshest of several varieties of of fruits and vegetables and the money to be able to afford and personal trainer and/or gym membership wouldn't choose that route.

Well, I guess I can. The all mighty dollar. She chose the route that pays the most. Big PHARMA is paying 7 figures for her to be diabetic and endorse their drug. A drugless, healthy, lifestyle paid nothing but self satisfaction and a longer life.

It's not my place to judge people and the decisions they make but I don't feel comfortable with what she did/is doing. I am only one woman and my voice may not matter to her or the people who love her but I am taking a stand. I have to show that I am not okay with that and that only way to do that is to remove my support. I no longer watch any of her shows. I don't download anymore of her recipes. I don't buy her cookbooks. If she makes guest appearances an a talk show I don't watch it that day. Anything that has her name on it I have washed my hands of it. That may seem silly to some and drastic to others but to each their own. You kn ow the saying: "If you don't stand up for something..."

All my financial aid paperwork is squared away and I have registered for my classes. All is left now is orientation, which I complete next Tuesday. After that I wait to start school. I am soooo excited. I worked out the numbers and it looks like I'll have accrued enough credit hours to get my associates degree in about 12 months. That means I'll have my bachelors in a little under two years! Yay me!

I've said a dozen times, I'm not the meal planning type. I like to go to the grocery store, see what is available and fresh and figure out what I'll cook right then. Honestly, I enjoy this style of grocery shopping. Unfortunately, I have realized this isn't the most money savvy way to do it. I have been perusing my last months store receipts and I have been paying a lot more than I would like. And today as I was making my grocery list, I realized that I need to bite the bullet and make a weekly meal plan.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with meal planning. It just wasn't my thing. Well, until now. I am determined to get our spending down and a lot of it goes on groceries. I use coupons religiously but when I don't plan out my purchases carefully, my savings get lost. So I took to Google Docs and created a template that I will print out every week and use to plan my meals. I made it available to view in case anyone else needs a very basic template. This Year Is Our Year

My husband and I have had it very rough for the past year plus. I'm not going to get into detail about it but it's been..rough. The important thing is, we've made it. We are still together, we love each other just as much, if not, more than the previous year. And we are even more determined to get our hearts desires. We decided that 2012 is our year. This is the last year we will struggle. We each have strengths that we are tapping into. For me, that is why I have become somewhat aggressive online. I have been doing surveys and joining rewards sites and even entering giveaways like crazy. In the past nine months I have probably earned/saved my family $900 in gift cards, free products and learning to work coupons and store sales for low OOP.

Now I have looked to another avenue to be the best I can be this year. I have decided to enroll in college. I'm going to attend school online for my Associates degree in Early Childhood Education. I'm very excited about that. I fully intend to pursue a bachelors but with my two babies and the uncertainty of where we'll be, I'm taking it one step at a time. I have already been accepted to the school and applied for financial aid. G-d's will everything goes smoothly and I will be starting school in March.

Also, and this is a biggie, we will be heading back home to Houston! Yayay! I have been homesick for about six months now and I can't wait to get back. We talked about it and our path takes us there so there we will go.

I just have to say that if I didn't have my faith in G-d I would have lost my mind by now. So thank G-d for faith!

Today's breakfast and dinner.

Breakfast: Bacon(yea, I know :-(...), a fried egg & cheese on an English muffin. (Oh my gosh, I found Nature's Own English muffins at the local bread thrift store for a dollar! YES, ONE DOLLAR!)

I had a nice leafy green salad for lunch and forgot to take a picture.

Dinner: Chicken tortilla soup. I found this recipe on a fellow blogger's website the other night during a blog hop. It looked so simple and delicious, I just had to make it! So I did. :-) You can find the recipe to this over at East 9th Street.

I absolutely LOVE to cook. I used to take pictures of my meals constantly. But lately, with everything going on, I just hadn't been feeling up to it. I cook out of necessity, to feed my family. Not just because I love it. Today felt different. I let everything go, all the uncertainties, all the tension. I just felt like cooking. I woke up this morning with that breakfast sandwich on my mind and I went and made it. I knew I wanted to do something different for dinner and I thought of the recipe I saw over at East 9th Street and went to the grocery store to get the ingredients I didn't have. It felt good. I felt good.

Slim Fast: Day One

I'm not a dieter. I never have been and probably never will be. I am, however, a woman who has had two children back to back and have put a quite a few pounds after losing the "baby weight". For me, this is bad. In my opinion I look like I'm three months pregnant! There are some things I'm doing about it and somethings I should be doing that I'm not.

This past week I got a few Slim Fast products for very cheap AND free using coupons from last Sunday's paper and this weeks sales. The products were just sitting in the closet and I thought, What the hell, I have the stuff so why not use it. I'm always complaining about my weight and here was a program that was geared towards women like me. I have about a weeks worth of shakes and snack bars so that's how long I'll be trying it.

Today was my first day. I know Thursday is an odd day to start something but if I kept putting it off until the "right" day, I would never start. I had a French Vanilla shake this morning. It was surprisingly good. I was expecting it to be chalky and medicinal. It wasn't at all! A couple of hours later I had a Peanut Butter Crunch Time snack bar. It was tiny. I mean really tiny. The Gerber Graduates cereal bars I buy for my 2 year-old are bigger! Buuut, it was yummy. It tasted like a candy bar I have had before but can't place the name. Maybe a Whatchamacallit? I'm not sure.

A couple of weeks ago I was in Food Lion and saw a tearpad with coupons for $1/2 Nabisco cookies 3.7oz-26oz. I took about 10 and just held on to them and today I saw the single pack cookies were on sale for $.99 so I got each box for $.49! I know there are women (and men) who can get all of that for pennies or even FREE but I have only been couponing since September/October and I am proud of how far I have come. My babies are growing so fast. Too fast if you ask me. My son started walking last week! My daughter is in the process of being potty trained and wears "big girl panties"! My "babies" won't be babies for much longer. I'm both excited and sad. They are turning into toddlers at break-neck speed. Sometimes I just watch them interact with each other and the world around them and my heart swells with love and amazement. These are my babies. I'm so proud to be their mother. This is one of those many emotional mommy moments that I am unashamed to experience.
